What the Energy tile shows

The Energy tile shows today's total calories burned and how far you are toward your daily target. Tap it to open Energy Burned, where you see the total, your Target and the percentage reached, plus a breakdown into Active, Resting and Total. When you hit your Move goal you see "Move goal reached!".

A period chart lets you look back across days with your Average, your Best Day and how often you met your goal. When the target has to be estimated, it is labelled Estimated so you know.

Why total burn matters

Most activity apps focus on active calories, the energy you burn by moving. That is only part of the picture. Your body burns a large share of its daily energy just keeping you alive: breathing, pumping blood, maintaining temperature and repairing tissue. For most people this resting burn is the bigger number.

Looking at the total is closer to how energy balance actually works, which is useful if you are trying to fuel training properly, maintain your weight or understand why you feel hungrier on some days than others. A day with a long ride and a desk day look very different in total burn, and seeing both numbers side by side makes that obvious.

Because the target is personal and follows your own activity plan, it fits your body instead of being a generic round number.

Getting an accurate number

Energy uses the active and resting energy that iPhone and Apple Watch save to Apple Health. Wearing your watch gives the most complete figure, since it records energy all day and night. Data from other devices or apps that save energy to Apple Health counts as well.

Keeping your profile details up to date makes the estimate more accurate. You can review them under Personal Metrics on the Dashboard.

How to use it

  1. 1Glance at the Energy tile in the evening to see how close your day came to its target.
  2. 2Use the Active and Resting split to see how much of today's burn came from movement.
  3. 3Change your Move goal on Apple Watch if your target feels too easy or too hard.
  4. 4Keep your profile details up to date so the resting estimate stays accurate.
  5. 5Use the period chart to see your best days and how often you meet your target.

Energy: questions and answers

Is the calorie target the same for everyone?

No. The target is personal to you and follows the Move goal you set, so it represents a full day of energy that fits your body and plan.

Why is my total so much higher than my active calories?

Total includes resting energy, the calories your body burns just to keep running. For most people that is the larger share of the day.

Why does my target say Estimated?

When there is not enough recorded data yet, FitRest estimates the target and labels it Estimated. It firms up as more data arrives.

Do I need an Apple Watch for Energy?

No. iPhone records energy too, but a watch worn all day gives a more complete total.

FitRest reads the data already in Apple Health, so there is nothing to set up beyond granting access.
