An Exertion score for Apple Watch that shows how hard you pushed today

Exertion is a 0-10 score for how much cardiovascular load you have taken on today, from workouts and everyday movement alike. FitRest also marks a target zone for the day that fits how ready your body is, so you can see whether you are under, in or over what your body is ready for.

What the Exertion score shows

The Exertion tile on the Dashboard shows a score from 0 to 10 with one decimal place, a band label and a bar. It builds through the day as your heart works above its resting level, whether that is a run, a long walk or carrying shopping up the stairs. The four bands each come with a short meaning in the app:

  • Light - minimal load, great for recovery days.
  • Moderate - maintains fitness without overreaching.
  • High - builds fitness, pair it with quality sleep.
  • All Out - maximum effort, prioritize recovery.

Your Exertion target

The bar on the tile also marks a target zone. The Exertion Target is the strain worth aiming for that day: on a well-recovered day it sits higher, on a tired day lower. The Strain & Exertion screen shows a Target row that reads Below Range, In Range or Above Range as your day goes on.

That pairing is what makes Exertion useful. A score on its own tells you what you did. Next to a target it tells you whether that was the right amount for today.

Why balancing load matters

Training works by stressing the body and then letting it recover stronger. Too little load and nothing changes. Too much, too often, and fatigue builds faster than you can clear it, which is when people stall, feel run down or pick up niggles. Most training plans mix hard, moderate and easy days for exactly this reason.

Heart rate is a practical way to measure that load because it reflects effort across every kind of activity, not just the ones you log as workouts. Matching your daily load to your recovery is the core idea: push on the days your body is ready, and keep it light on the days it is not. Over weeks, that rhythm tends to produce steadier progress than training to a fixed plan regardless of how you feel.

Inside Strain & Exertion

Tap the tile to open Strain & Exertion. It shows the day's score with your Elevated HR time, number of workouts and Peak Effort. Workout Exertion rates each workout on its own 1-10 scale, labelled Easy, Moderate, Hard or All Out, so you can see which session did most of the work. A 14-Day Strain Trend shows how your load has built up or eased off across two weeks.

A Good to Know note is worth remembering: strength sessions often read low because heart rate does not climb as much during lifting, so treat a strength day's score as a lower bound. Wearing your watch consistently through the day keeps the score complete.

How to use it

  1. 1Check Recovery in the morning, then glance at where the Exertion target sits for the day.
  2. 2During the day, use the Below Range, In Range and Above Range reading to decide whether to add a session or call it a day.
  3. 3After a workout, open Workout Exertion to see how hard that session actually was for your heart.
  4. 4Use the 14-Day Strain Trend to make sure hard days are followed by easier ones.
  5. 5Add the Exertion Lock Screen widget or watch complication to keep an eye on it without opening the app.

Exertion: questions and answers

Can Apple Watch track strain?

Apple Watch records the heart rate and workout data behind strain. FitRest turns that data into a daily Exertion score from 0 to 10, so you can see how hard your day has been at a glance.

What is a good Exertion score?

There is no single good number. The right amount depends on how recovered you are, which is why FitRest shows a target zone each day. Landing In Range is the goal.

Why is my Exertion score low after weight training?

Heart rate rises less during lifting than during cardio, so strength days tend to read low. The app suggests treating a strength day's score as a lower bound.

Does walking count toward Exertion?

Yes. Any time your heart works above its resting level adds to the score, not just logged workouts.

Is Exertion the same as strain?

Yes. The tile is called Exertion and the detail screen is called Strain & Exertion. Both refer to the same 0-10 score.
