A water tracker that fits into your day

FitRest's water tracker lets you log a drink from the Dashboard, a Home Screen widget or your Apple Watch, and shows how close you are to a daily goal set for you. Over time it also shows how evenly you spread your drinking through the day, not just how much you had.

What the water tracker shows

The Today's Water card on the Dashboard shows your progress toward the day's goal, with an amount ladder and an Add button right on the card. Choose an amount, tap Add, and the total updates. The full Water screen adds a timeline of every drink for the selected day, container presets from a Shot or Small Cup up to a Large Bottle or 1 Liter, and a goal you can adjust.

Your goal starts as a Recommended amount personal to you. Adding your age and weight in FitRest makes that recommendation more accurate, and you can always replace it with a number of your own or reset it back to the recommendation.

  • Hydration Trends over 7, 30 or 90 days or a custom range, with Daily Avg, Goal Met % and Best Day.
  • A per-day timeline so you can see when you drank, not just how much.
  • Timing Consistency - a score from Excellent to Irregular for how evenly you spread water across your waking hours.

Why steady hydration matters

Water is involved in nearly everything the body does, from regulating temperature to keeping blood volume up during exercise. Even mild dehydration is commonly linked to tiredness, headaches and a harder-feeling workout. Most people do not notice they are behind until they are thirsty, which is why a simple running total helps.

When you drink matters as well as how much. Getting most of your water in one go late in the evening is less comfortable than drinking steadily, and it can mean more trips out of bed at night. That is the idea behind Timing Consistency: it looks only at your waking hours, leaves your sleep time out automatically, and works for any schedule, including night shifts.

One amount ladder everywhere

The same amount ladder is used on the Dashboard card, the log screen, the Quick Add widget and the Apple Watch, so a given step always means the same amount. Standard steps run from 50 ml up to 1,200 ml, or from 2 oz up to 40 oz.

If you drink from small glasses or cups, switch Water Increments to fine in Settings > Units. Fine steps run from 25 ml up to 600 ml, or 1 oz up to 20 oz. The setting applies in the app, on the widget and on your watch at the same time.

Log water without opening the app

The Water - Quick Add widget sits on your iPhone Home Screen and logs a drink straight from there on iOS 17 and later. There are also Daily and Weekly water widgets, and the Health Overview widgets show water alongside your other logs.

On Apple Watch, the Water page lets you turn the Digital Crown to choose an amount, and a label changes from Shot to Cup, Mug, Bottle or Large as you go. A time picker lets you log a drink from up to two hours ago. The default amount the page opens on is set from your iPhone. The Water complication shows a ring against your goal and opens the log page with a tap. Every entry can be saved to Apple Health.

How to use it

  1. 1Add the Water Quick Add widget to your Home Screen and tap it each time you finish a glass or bottle.
  2. 2Set Water Reminders at times you usually forget, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon. Presets include Morning, Lunch, Afternoon, Evening and Dinner.
  3. 3Check Timing Consistency once a week. If it reads Irregular, try spreading drinks across the morning and afternoon instead of catching up at night.
  4. 4Use Hydration Trends to see your Goal Met % and adjust your goal if it is consistently out of reach or too easy.
  5. 5Switch to fine increments if you mostly drink from small cups, so each step matches what you actually drink.

Water: questions and answers

How much water should I drink a day?

Needs vary from person to person with body size, activity and climate. FitRest suggests a Recommended goal personal to you, which gets more accurate when you add your age and weight, and you can set your own goal at any time.

Can I log water from my iPhone Home Screen?

Yes. The Water - Quick Add widget logs a drink straight from the Home Screen on iOS 17 and later, without opening the app. On iOS 16 a tap opens FitRest instead.

Can I track water on Apple Watch?

Yes. The FitRest watch app has a Water page where you pick an amount with the Digital Crown, and a Water complication that shows your progress and opens the log page.

Does FitRest support ounces?

Yes. Water can be shown in ml or oz, with standard or fine increments, and the unit syncs to your Apple Watch.

Does water from other apps count toward my goal?

Yes. Water another app saves to Apple Health appears in your timeline tagged External and counts toward your daily total.
