Sleep Patterns: a heatmap of every night you have slept

Sleep Patterns turns your recent nights into a grid with one square per night, so weeks and months of sleep fit on one screen. Pick any of 13 metrics, from sleep quality to blood oxygen, and tap a square to read that night.

How the heatmap works

Each square is one night, arranged by week like a calendar. Brighter squares are better nights: more sleep, a higher score, fewer awakenings or a lower heart rate, depending on the metric you pick. Tap any square to read the value for that night.

A single night tells you little. A grid of them makes patterns jump out: a run of dim squares after a stressful week, a bright stretch during a holiday, or a weekday that always looks different from the rest.

The 13 metrics

You can switch the grid between thirteen measures of your night.

  • Sleep: Sleep Quality, Sleep Duration, Restorative Sleep, Awakenings and Sessions.
  • Timing: Bedtime and Wake Time.
  • Heart: Sleeping Heart Rate, Lowest Heart Rate, Highest Heart Rate and HRV.
  • Breathing: Blood Oxygen and Respiratory Rate.

The detail screen

The detail screen opens a full year grid that you can page through, so you can look back at earlier periods. It adds Highlights for the period, a By Weekday view that sets weeknights against weekends, and a By Month view that shows how each month compared. This is where seasonal changes, a new routine or a busy month at work tend to show up.

Why long-term sleep patterns matter

Sleep changes slowly and is easy to misremember. Most people have a fair sense of last night, a rough sense of last week, and very little idea how this month compares with the one before. Yet many of the things that affect sleep work over longer stretches: seasons and daylight, training blocks, travel, work deadlines, a new baby, a change in caffeine or alcohol habits.

Seeing many nights at once lets you separate a bad night from a bad pattern. If your sleeping heart rate has been brighter for a month since you started exercising more, or your bedtime squares have drifted later every week, the grid makes it visible in seconds. That kind of long view helps you judge whether a change you made is actually working.

What data you need

Sleep Patterns reads your nights from Apple Health. Duration, sessions, bedtime and wake time work with any sleep source. Stage-based metrics like Restorative Sleep and the heart, HRV, blood oxygen and respiratory rate metrics need an Apple Watch or another device that records them while you sleep and saves them to Apple Health.

How to use it

  1. 1Start with Sleep Quality to get an overall feel for the last few weeks.
  2. 2Switch to Bedtime and look for weeks where your squares change, then compare with Sleep Quality for the same weeks.
  3. 3Open By Weekday to see whether one night of the week is regularly worse.
  4. 4Page back through the year grid to compare this season with earlier ones.
  5. 5Tap a dim square, then go to that day in the Sleep tab to see what happened.

Sleep Patterns: questions and answers

What do the colours in Sleep Patterns mean?

Each square is one night, and brighter squares are better nights for the metric you have chosen, for example more sleep, fewer awakenings or a lower heart rate.

Can I see a whole year of sleep?

Yes. The detail screen shows a year grid you can page through, plus views by weekday and by month.

Which metrics can I view?

Thirteen: Sleep Quality, Sleep Duration, Restorative Sleep, Awakenings, Sessions, Bedtime, Wake Time, Sleeping Heart Rate, Lowest Heart Rate, Highest Heart Rate, HRV, Blood Oxygen and Respiratory Rate.

Why are some squares empty?

An empty square means there was no data for that metric that night, for example if you did not wear your watch to bed.
