A blood pressure log for your home readings

FitRest's blood pressure log keeps the readings from your home cuff in one place. Enter systolic and diastolic in mmHg, and each reading gets a clear category, from Normal up to Hypertensive Crisis. Trends then show how steady your readings are over weeks and months.

What the blood pressure log shows

Each entry is a systolic and diastolic value in mmHg, a time from the When? picker and an optional note. The note is stored with the reading itself. Every reading is placed into one of the widely used blood pressure categories, each with its own colour, and the app shows the mmHg range for each one.

  • Normal - less than 120/80 mmHg.
  • Elevated - 120-129 systolic with diastolic under 80.
  • High (Stage 1) - 130-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic.
  • High (Stage 2) - 140 or more systolic or 90 or more diastolic.
  • Hypertensive Crisis - readings well above Stage 2.

Why home readings and consistency matter

Blood pressure moves all day. It rises with stress, exercise, caffeine and even talking, and it is often higher in a clinic than at home. That is why a single reading is a snapshot, and a series of home readings taken the same way is far more useful. Long-term high blood pressure often has no symptoms at all, which is one more reason people keep a regular log.

How you measure matters as much as how often. FitRest includes simple measurement tips: measure at the same time each day, rest for 5 minutes before measuring, avoid caffeine for 30 minutes before, and sit with your feet flat on the floor.

FitRest is not a medical device and does not diagnose any condition. If your readings concern you, or one falls in the highest category, talk to a doctor.

Trends and variability

Blood Pressure Trends shows your readings over 7, 30 or 90 days or a custom range. Alongside the averages, Systolic Variability and Diastolic Variability describe how much your readings move around, labelled Very Steady, Normal or Variable. A day timeline lists each reading with its category.

Seeing variability next to your averages helps you notice when readings become less consistent, which is useful context when you review your log with a doctor.

Logging, reminders and export

On iPhone, choose Blood Pressure from the + button on the Dashboard. The Blood Pressure card on the Dashboard shows your latest reading and how long ago it was taken. It is hidden by default and can be turned on in Customize. On Apple Watch, the Blood Pressure page has systolic and diastolic steppers, so you can log right after taking a reading. Reading and Weekly blood pressure widgets are available for the Home Screen.

Blood Pressure Reminders send a Blood Pressure Check at the times you set, which makes measuring at the same time each day much easier. With Save to Apple Health on, every reading is written there, and readings from other apps that save to Apple Health appear in FitRest. The export button saves the last 30 days as a Text File, CSV File or PDF Document.

How to use it

  1. 1Set a Blood Pressure Reminder for the same time each morning or evening and measure then.
  2. 2Rest for 5 minutes, sit with your feet flat on the floor, and skip caffeine for 30 minutes before you measure.
  3. 3Add a note when something may have affected a reading, such as a stressful day or a missed night of sleep.
  4. 4Review Blood Pressure Trends and Variability over 30 days rather than reacting to a single number.
  5. 5Export the last 30 days as a PDF to share with your doctor.

Blood Pressure: questions and answers

What is a normal blood pressure reading?

In the widely used categories that FitRest labels, a reading below 120/80 mmHg is Normal. Ask your doctor what target is right for you.

Can Apple Watch measure blood pressure in FitRest?

No. FitRest logs readings you take with a blood pressure cuff. You can enter them on iPhone or on the Blood Pressure page of the FitRest Apple Watch app.

Does FitRest save blood pressure to Apple Health?

Yes, when Save to Apple Health is on. Readings that other apps save to Apple Health also show up in FitRest.

What time of day should I take my blood pressure?

The most useful log comes from measuring at the same time each day under the same conditions. FitRest's Blood Pressure Reminders can prompt you at that time.

Can I export my blood pressure readings?

Yes. The export button on the blood pressure screen saves the last 30 days as a Text File, CSV File or PDF Document.

FitRest reads the data already in Apple Health, so there is nothing to set up beyond granting access.
