Heart rate recovery: how fast your heart settles after exercise

Cardio Recovery shows how far your heart rate falls in the first minute after you finish a workout. A bigger, faster drop is a sign of good fitness and a responsive nervous system, and FitRest tracks it across years so you can see it improve.

What Cardio Recovery shows

The card on the Heart tab is subtitled HR drop 1 minute after workouts. It shows your latest reading as a BPM drop, a level from Low through Fair, Good and Very Good to Excellent, your average over the chosen window and a sparkline of past readings. You can look back over the last one to five years.

The detail screen adds the recovery scale with each level explained, a trend chart and insight cards, including A Window Into Your Nervous System, which explains why this number says more than how fit your legs are.

Why heart rate recovery matters

When you stop exercising, your nervous system shifts from the push of the sympathetic side to the calming parasympathetic side, and your heart rate starts to fall. How quickly that happens in the first minute is called heart rate recovery. A fast drop suggests a well-conditioned heart and a nervous system that switches gears easily.

Heart rate recovery is widely used in exercise science as a marker of cardiovascular fitness, and research has linked a slow recovery with poorer long-term heart health. For most people it improves with regular aerobic training. Day to day it can also dip when you are tired, dehydrated, overheated or under-recovered, so an unusually small drop after a normal session can be a hint to take it easier.

FitRest is a wellness app, not a medical device, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. If a heart reading worries you, talk to a doctor.

How to get reliable readings

The reading comes from the heart rate Apple Watch records just after a workout ends. The app's advice is simple: end the workout from your watch and keep it on for one minute. Taking the watch off, or ending the workout long after you stopped moving, leaves no clean recovery minute to read.

Readings are most comparable when the workouts are similar. A drop after an all-out interval session will look different from a drop after an easy walk, so the average and the long-term trend are more meaningful than any single number.

How to use it

  1. 1Finish workouts by ending them on your Apple Watch, then stand or walk easily for a minute with the watch still on.
  2. 2Compare readings from similar sessions, for example your regular run, to see real change.
  3. 3Look at the multi-year window to see whether months of training have moved your average up.
  4. 4If a normal session gives a much smaller drop than usual, pair it with your Recovery score and consider an easier next day.

Cardio Recovery: questions and answers

What is a good heart rate recovery on Apple Watch?

Generally, the more your heart rate drops in the first minute after hard exercise, the better. What matters most is your own trend: a recovery that improves over months is a good sign your fitness is improving.

What is heart rate recovery?

Heart rate recovery is how many beats per minute your heart rate falls in a set time after you stop exercising, usually the first minute. A larger drop generally reflects better cardiovascular fitness.

What is a good heart rate recovery after one minute?

FitRest rates each reading from Low to Excellent so you can see where you stand. The more useful goal is improving your own average over months of training.

Why don't I have a Cardio Recovery reading?

A reading needs heart rate from the minute after a workout ends. End the workout on your Apple Watch and keep wearing it for a minute so that recovery period is recorded.

Can I improve my heart rate recovery?

For most people, yes. Regular aerobic exercise, enough sleep and good hydration all tend to help, and the change shows up gradually in the trend.
